Meet at 12pm on The People’s Lawn (600 E Trade St) to march with members of Occupy Charlotte to the Duke Energy building where we will join activists from other organizations for a rally and press conference. After this event, please return with us to The People’s Lawn for the Occupy Charlotte General Assembly.
Greenpeace, the organizer of the Duke event named “Occupy Duke,” says this: “We will be having a rally and press conference to call on Duke Energy to quit coal and supply NC with clean, affordable and safe energy now! Speakers representing different interests including environmental, public health and economic justice will call out Duke Energy for their dirty rate hike and demand more for NC.

In June 2011, the company TriTex bought the Stonewall Jackson Homes Community. Now they are trying to evict us all, to sell the property. At the same time, when they bought the property, they stopped giving tenants 12 month leases. If they knew at this time that they were going to sell the community, why didn’t they let us know? They waited until the beginning of October to tell us we had 30 days to leave. Included in this mass evictions are families with leases that have not expired. This is a violation of the law. Now they are kicking everyone out with no options on where to go. This is a violation of our human rights! REOCCUPY OUR HOMES!

When the U.S. government began its attack on Afghanistan 10 years ago, President Bush called it a “war on terror.” It was followed by 8 years of U.S. war in Iraq and now war in Libya and drone wars on Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia and Sudan under President Obama. These are all wars for oil, resources and markets in the interests of corporate power.
At the same time, the U.S. government is carrying out attacks on working people within the U.S., cutting back on health care, education and vital services while bailing out the Wall St. banks and insurance companies. Every time people call for money for social services, we are told there is no money, but the government always finds money for its wars & corporate bail outs.
Join us in a march to demand an end to U.S. wars in Afghanistan & Iraq, an end to U.S. military aid to Israel, and an end to U.S. bombing and destruction in Libya and an end to the growing repression at home.
We will protest home foreclosures, corporate greed, and the billions spent on war that could be used for peoples' needs here at home instead. Each U.S. cruise missile being used to bomb Libya could pay ten teachers for a year here in the United States.
The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have the cost the U.S. more than $3.7 trillion according to the Cost Of War report issued by Watson Institute for International Studies.
In addition, over 5,000 U.S. soldiers have been killed and tens of thousands wounded. It is estimated that over 1,000,000 Iraqi civilans and at least 10,000, but possibly up to 30,000, Afghan civilians have been killed as a results of the wars.
We will gather at noon at the Charlotte Board Of Education and rally to save our public schools and teachers.
From there we will march through uptown to the square and rally in front of Bank Of America. This will be followed by a march to join our sisters and brothers at the Occupy Charlotte protest encampment (similar to the action planned for NYC).
This is a day of nationally coordinated antiwar actions in cities across the U.S. called by the United National Antiwar Coalition. Protests are scheduled across the country including New York City, Philadelphia, Boston, Charlotte, NC, Portland, Minneapolis, San Francisco and Sacramento, CA.
This will be a peaceful, nonviolent protest and it is legal and all necessary permits have been obtained. Bring signs, friends and family.

Over 500 join Occupy Charlotte Oct. 8 March on Bank of America HQ
On Saturday, October 8, over 500 people of all ages and races joined together at Old City Hall and marched on Bank of America's HQ in uptown Charlotte, NC. The group Occupy Charlotte, part of the nationwide Occupy Wall St Movement, protested and spoke out against corporate greed.
Participants then marched back to Old City Hall for a General Assembly to form working groups and begin setting up the permanent Occupy Charlotte encampment.
Another Assembly of occupation participants was held at 7:00 pm where the working groups gave reports.
About three dozen protesters stayed at the encampment overnight and plan to stay as long as it takes to achieve economic justice. They have vowed to stay for at least a year and will be a major presence during the Democratic National Convention.

Task Force Targets 9 Libraries For Closure

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A special task force recommended closing nine more Mecklenburg County libraries if the county could not allocate more money to the library system.
The recommendations were unveiled Tuesday night.
The task force’s proposal included closing libraries at Steele Creek, Mint Hill, Mountain Island, Matthews, Davidson, Hickory Grove, Plaza Midwood, Myers Park, and Cornelius. Library officials would close the branches as funding runs out.
The task force said an additional $1.8 million would allow the library system to expand hours at the regional branches and keep all of the branches open.
According to the task force’s plan, eight branches would remain open and three others would be protected. The six regional libraries as well as the main branch and the ImaginOn library would remain open. Libraries at Scaleybark, Sugar Creek and West Boulevard would remain open and be protected from other cutbacks.
The task force also recommended expanding the hours of the regional branches even if the library system could not secure additional funding.

A coalition of labor, civil rights and religious groups rallied in front of the General Assembly offices today to call for an end to North Carolina's ban on public employees' collective bargaining and to resist balancing the state budget at the expense of public sector jobs and programs.
The rally drew about 100 supporters who listened to several speakers representing labor, churches and the NAACP, staff writer Craig Jarvis reports. About two dozen people staged a counter-protest across across the street in Bicentennial Plaza, shouting and chanting throughout the rally.
Both sides cited the public employees' union standoff in Wisconsin, where that state's governor has proposed to reduce public employee's pay and benefits and to limit their collective-bargaining rights.
"In North Carolina and the rest of the Southern states, we are denied collective bargaining," Saladin Muhammad of the International Workers Justice Campaign and UE Local 150 North Carolina Public Service Workers Union. "That came out of a period called Jim Crow."
Coalition members filed into the Legislative Building to present copies of the call for a repeal on the bargaining prohibition to the offices of Sen. Phil Berger, pro tem of the Senate and to Rep. Tom Tillis, speaker of the house. Tillis briefly greeted rally leaders and agreed to schedule a time for a more substantial meeting.
North Carolina and Virginia are the only states that have a complete ban on public employee collective bargaining.
Randy Dye of Pittsboro, one of the counter-protesters, said the network of Triangle conservative organizations only heard about the rally 24 hours earlier, and didn't have enough time to mount a larger presence. "We wanted to face off with them," he said.
The conservative protesters carried signs reading "Unions -- Too Big, Too Costly" and "Wisconsin: Pass the Bill." They shouted "freeloaders!" and chanted "U.S.A"
The other side countered with their own chants, including "People's budget! People's budget!"

We will demonstrate in front of Caterkiller in solidarity with the Freedom Flotilla taking humanitarian aid to Gaza. This day also marks the 43rd anniversary of Israel's Six Day War in 1967 against Palestine & her neighbors.
The company which best exemplifies the interest of US corporations in the Occupation and the complete refusal to address human rights concerns in the region is Caterpillar. The most destructive weapon of the Occupation may not be an F-16 or helicopter gunship, but rather, an armor plated D-9 or D-11 bulldozer. These are the machines that have demolished thousands of homes, uprooted countless olive trees, and carved gaping holes in roads, making them impassable. Even when used in Israel’s colonial intrusions on the land through construction of illegal housing or bypass roads, CAT equipment is being used daily in the commission of war crimes and violations of human rights.
Call for Action: Global Day to Break Israeli Siege
Today we watched with horror as Israel committed its massacre against the Freedom Flotilla to Gaza murdering at least 9 unarmed civilians and leaving over 50 injured. The peaceful Flotilla carrying over 10,000 tones of humanitarian aid to Gaza and over 700 pro-Palestinian activists was attacked by Israeli Navy forces using live ammunition, teargas, grenades…etc.
The Israeli apartheid state has again acted in full impunity against international law and needs to be held accountable for the murder of unarmed civilians at sea and illegal barbaric piracy of civilian vessels in international water carrying humanitarian aid for Gaza.
In memory of the brave men and women who lost their lives on the Freedom Flotilla to Gaza, today we are calling all free citizens and people of conscience around the world to a Global Day of Action to carry forward Freedom Flotilla’s cause of breaking the Israeli siege of Gaza.
Let’s mark Saturday, 5th June 2010 as Global Day to Break Israeli Siege with protests and demonstrations in front of Israeli embassies and consulates all over the world. We call on you to join us on this day to demand in a global united voice, from our governments to:
- Take a stance against this horrid inhumanity committed by Israel against armless humanitarians and activists by following Turkey’s footsteps in shutting down Israeli’s consulates. Crimes against inhumanity are inexcusable and will not be welcome in our countries.
- Join the growing international Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement in cutting all political, economic, cultural and academic ties with Israel as a statement that crimes against humanity are inexcusable, unwelcome and will not pass unchallenged.
- Impose full sanctions against Israel until they fully abide by international law and UN conventions in relation to the siege in Gaza, occupation and apartheid in Palestine as well as the right of return of refugees.

Unemployment, especially of youth and people of color, is skyrocketing, despite the misrepresentation in the mainstream media that unemployment is still low*. Many, many more are underemployed, often having to work two, even three jobs to barely make ends meet. Even more do not receive adequate benefits, such as affordable health insurance, from employment.
Many of those fortunate enough to have jobs are facing forced cuts in hours, pay, and benefits. Tuition is increasing and financial aid options are decreasing whilst class sizes continue increasing and the quality of education is decreasing.
On September 24-25, delegates from the 20 countries with the largest economies and delegates from the IMF and WTO will gather in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for the G20 summit to discuss how they can further further corporate and imperialist interests.
To protest the G20, a Tent City march will occur outside from September 20-25.
Protests will commence with a mass March for Jobs on Sunday, September 20, where we will fight for jobs at a living wage for all.
On August 29, 2009, a panel of speakers will present on the aforementioned various issues working class people are facing in relation to the G20 (youth issues, unemployment, workplace oppression, along with general information on the G20) and answer your questions

* Fairness for public employees: Private sector employees in North Carolina have bargaining rights, why not public employees? Only North Carolina and Virginia prohibit all their public employees from bargaining with their employers.Sign HOPE's letter to legislators!
* Freedom for state and local governments: Right now state and local government agencies are banned from sitting down and negotiating a contract with their own employees, even if they want to.
* Local solutions: Collective bargaining would allow state and local government agencies to deal with problems specific to their employees.
* Ending Jim Crow injustice: Public employees have been stuck in 1959 with no legal right to negotiate any improvement in their working conditions, and virtually no recourse in the event of a grievance or disciplinary action. Collective bargaining would give public employees a way to work for fairness and respect at work.

Health Care Rallies All Across NC on Saturday, August 29th
The novelty of the news coverage of the rowdiness of the health care reform debate is wearing off. And as the dust settles, we realize that the lies about reform didn't stick and that there are more people in North Carolina who support real reform than opponents who don't.
Our numbers have always been larger than the side fighting against reform, but at the beginning of Congress' August recess, opponents were more visible. That is not the case any more, and we need to end August with a real display of public support so our Senators and Representatives remember what they are working for when they return to Washington.

Our numbers have always been larger than the side fighting against reform, but at the beginning of Congress' August recess, opponents were more visible. That is not the case any more, and we need to end August with a real display of public support so our Senators and Representatives remember what they are working for when they return to Washington.

PROTEST ALERT: No Nazi's in Greensboro (Sat. Aug. 29th)

On August 29th from 10am-6pm the National Socialist Movement (NSM) is having their regional conference in Greensboro. There is an anti-racist unity rally being organized downtown. It is going to start at 3pm at hamburger square / the corner of S.Elm and Mcgee St. hopefully this event brings out all peoples from all over Greensboro.

STATEMENT FROM GRAF ON THE MOTIVATION
Motives behind the rally:
We believe that organizations like the NSM need to be countered and our "communities" need to be made aware of the situation in order to organize opposition. Ignoring organizations like this gives them more ground to build their organization and potentially give them enough space to gain legitimacy in communities, cities, and peoples minds. Adding to an already tense local situation.
Due to past experiences with openly fascist organizations, they too have the potential to become a problem not only for minorities but also activists/activities of all traditions, tendencies, and political work. If they gain in any city they would add to organized bodies out to divide and destroy communities. The threat of not only having to organize against police brutality but also fascist violence is a possibility. It could potentially become a situation where fascist organizations begin to counter progressive activities in our communities. This is not the case here and now, it is important to keep it that way, and fortunately Greensboro has not had an openly fascist organization counter our activities since the 70s/80s (besides policing agencies).
Fascist organizations are not just disconnected fanatics who have nothing to offer people/the right-wing. Fascism and fascist tendencies are interconnected and disrupt the local struggles whether it is: immigration issues, class issues, police brutality, countering conservative local politics, etc...the connection exists because racism is not only embodied within the extreme right-wing. We think one major goal of this rally is to point out that fascist and racist ideology does not only motivate fascists/klansmen/nazis but also motivates peoples' mindset regarding immigration, poverty, class, community segregation, where people live,etc... All these things are connected.
In the struggle against racism/fascism there is no difference between the police, klan, nazis, conservative pundits,etc.. There are only variations of racism and racist tactics but at its core it amounts to division, potentially fascist/racist violence, and justifications for such police units as the Gang unit. The motives of fascists are racist and the motives of the police are racist. The police as an institution protects the rich and divides the poor. Fascists, the police, and conservative local politicians are cogs in the same machine which maintains this class system.
In the struggle against racism/fascism/police brutality there is no difference between the police, klan, nazis, conservative politicians,etc...There are only variations and tactics on how to approach the problem at hand. We think that when it comes to fascist organizations like the NSM it is important to show strong community opposition, like a rally, so that they do not want to deal with a community that over powers them and unmotivates them to try to organize in Greensboro. Though these racist organizations/institutions are not all the same they operate based on the same assumptions, racist notions, and base their behavior off racist ideologies. We have to counter and organize against it all. This type of organizing is just one little aspect of what is needed in the struggle against racism. We recognize this but would also say that a loose network of people and organizations, who are also engaged in other forms of community organizing, are attempting to build for this rally and we hope for more involvement from other individuals and organizations.
We think that the 1979 massacre and the trial which resulted in not guilty proves that right-wing fanatics, the police, and a larger form of racism, social racism are all interconnected. It was not only the klansmen/nazis that had a hand in the brutality and violence acted out upon "the community" and in a way we think and hope this rally will speak to that fact or at least bring that to light. But also that this rally will not be contained to a small contingent of people or activists as in 79. The CWP was small and "The Death to the Klan" rally was also small, we hope that this rally will be large and diverse enough to drive the point home and keep people safe. The larger demonstrations after 79 in the early 80s seemed to have been amazing and empowering, that is the hopes of next weekend. We highly doubt that this event will bring armed klansmen down anyway, today is not the same social/political environment as 79 and the Klan seem to be quite passive regarding openly organizing. The point this rally wants to make is that Greensboro is a city that sees the connection to racist police agencies, racist laws, and fascism/racism on all levels.
Will the NSM use the media spectacle in hopes of gaining more light to their organization, sure, maybe but that notion is debatable. If a rally was not organized they could use this city's passiveness to their advantage and build a stronger presence in Greensboro potentially becoming a real problem to us all. The NSM and other white power organizers have expressed interest in marching or rallying on November 3rd, 2009 to glorify the 1979 Greensboro Massacre, this cannot be allowed. We hope that the rally and a show of community opposition to the NSM will give them enough reason to not organize for the 30th Anniverseary of the Greensboro Massacre.

The organizing around the 29th started last week after information about the NSM coming to Greensboro was announced and realizing that a rally was not yet being organized by other community groups, organizations, etc...
Friends, community organizations, etc.. have and are being contacted in hopes of getting people together for the rally. The rally is specifically being organized not only to counter fascism/racism but to also connect Greensboro beyond email lists and other forms of communication, communication through action. The rally is a peaceful gathering of anyone who opposes the above mentioned problem. This rally is being organized in the spirit of safety. The rally is open to all opposing racism and other calls to action have been made regarding the 29th. But again the rally itself is being organized in the spirit of safety. There have been made plenty of calls to action, fliers made, fliers distributed/being distributed, and people and organizations are getting with other organizations and people in hopes to turn this event out. It has been organized on a loose platform against racism/fascism and by a loose network of people contacting who they can so that other organizations and people can join in without having to join or already be active in all or any organizations. In the hopes that people will take this and run with it is one of many goals. Sure there are weaknesses to organizing without a structured organization taking on all the responsibility but this event will hopefully speak for itself, allow people to build on what already exists in Greensboro, and build beyond into the future. It is open to anyone who wants to speak on the connection between the "big picture" and local struggles.

Last year around the same time people where attacked in Greensboro by a group of men with white power connections. So this rally is not just being organized for the above stated reasons but also for peoples' safety. When NSM events and similar events happen in a city that city can become a focal point for racists of all types to gather. Another reason to get people together so that they are not alone on that day is important. These fascist organizations and fascist individuals pose multiple threats and anytime they decide to organize something "the community" needs to be aware, counter their plans, and be together.
