April 5 Solidarity with Political Prisoner Dr. Sami Al-Arian

6:15 p.m at The Islamic Center of Charlotte-South, 559 N. Polk St. Pineville, NC

A screening of the award-winning film, U.S.A. vs. Sami Al-Arian will be shown, along with the filmmaker, Line Halvorsen and Sami Al-Arian's attorney, Peter Erlinder. U.S.A. vs. Sami Al-Arian is an intimate family portrait that documents the American-Muslim family's desperate attempt to fight terrorism charges leveled the U.S. goverment.

The film raises questions on whether it is possible for a man like Sami Al-Arian to receive a fair trial in the U.S. given the current hostile enviroment against Muslims and the strong support of Israel. It presents democracy in a new light in a post 9/11 culture of fear, where "security measures" trump free speech and punishment is melted out in the name of protection.

Sami Al-Arian has been a tireless voice for freedom and justice at home and abroad. He worked hard to raise awareness in the U.S. about the plight of the Palestinians. He also attended briefings at the White House and Justice Dept., adised several members of Congress and met both President Clinton and Bush.

A panel discussion will follow the showing of the film, with filmmaker Line Halvorsen, Attorney Peter Erlinder and Muslim activist Jibril Hough and other invited guests.
